Over the past five weeks, I've had the pleasure of taking part in the Beyond Extent "Kingdom Below" Team Challenge, and I am happy to announce that our team were winners of the Realistic Category!
My task for this challenge was to create a Rock Kit that can be used across the entire scene. It was a personal challenge aswell since I never sculpted rocks before and the project relied heavily on their appearance. I created a Tri Planar Shader with a packed baked normal map to reduce texture sampling and still ensure high quality, even on large scale Rocks. It goes hand in hand with a detailed normal and a world noise mask for texture breakup.
I sculpted everything per hand in Zbrush and created the RGB Masks in Substance Painter. The Rock Kit was also reused for our crystals, we just switched the shader for those.
